St. Louis, Missouri is a hub of collaboration between churches and businesses or corporations. In 1866, Cupples & Co. hired brothers Harry and Robert Brookings, who eventually became business partners, and the company entered an important period of growth.
The St. Louis Regional Chamber, the Chaifetz School of Business at Saint Louis University, and the Olin School of Business at the University of Washington have all contributed to the development of these partnerships. The Green The Church organization provides resources for religious institutions to implement sustainability projects. John's United Church of Christ is taking advantage of this by insulating their large attic, replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lights, and supplying approximately 100 homes in the surrounding community with LED bulbs for their porches.
James River Church is an Assemblies of God megachurch with four campuses in southwestern Missouri, three of which are in the Springfield metropolitan area. The Central Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church are transforming vacant lots into community gardens and will distribute the products grown in these spaces to local food banks and families in need. Beloved Community United Methodist Church is developing the Joshua Green Team for a coalition of Gate District churches to undertake their own ecological projects.
The North County Alliance for Environmental Change (NCAEC) was created in collaboration with several mayors from municipalities in the north of the county, in response to concerns about food insecurity, vacant lots, and the need for more STEM opportunities for local students. Marty Lyons, president and CEO of Ameren Corporation, and Scott Hartwig, leader of commercial banking for Regions and market executive for Greater St. Louis, are both involved in this initiative. Joshua House Ministries Christian Church is partnering with LinkSTL to engage children in their neighborhood about safe cycling practices. They will offer a program in which young people will receive their own bike and helmet and participate in group bike rides, where they will learn about air and water quality, native plants, and environmental justice. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is also known as Saint Louis Cathedral and is a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church located in the Central West End.
